I am Joyce L. Harris. I write from Charlotte, North Carolina. This blog is called Creations by Joyce, Interiors Design for the Soul. It is where I put down what I have been given to say, when I have been given to say it. Not weekly on a schedule. When a thing is true enough to write.
What I have lived through
I am an overcomer. I have endured many of life's challenges. I am a product of the South. I grew up in the 60s and experienced Jim Crow firsthand. That is not a sentence I write lightly. I write it because it is mine.
I was in Memphis when Martin Luther King was assassinated. I was on Capitol Hill on September 11. I witnessed the Million Man March in 1995. These are not stories I tell to perform. They are simply the rooms history walked me through.
What I have done
I lived in Washington, DC and worked in the federal government. Along the way I worked with some of the great professionals of my time:
- Charles "Charlie" Scott — insurance mogul and owner of the CSO Agency in Alexandria, Virginia.
- Dr. Barbara Reynolds — renowned journalist and ordained minister.
- Courtland Cox of SNCC, at the Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency.
- Greta Van Susteren and Roger Cossack from CNN's Burden of Proof.
- Patrice Andrews and Mick Kaczorowski from Discovery Channel Pictures.
I learned what I learned from being in those rooms. From watching people work. From watching the country work, and not work.
This chapter
In the third chapter of my life I have realized I am a late bloomer. I am also convinced it is not too late. As a budding entrepreneur in this new chapter, I am beginning again to create the lifestyle that lets me live the dreams God gave me and fulfill my purpose. One of those dreams is the writing you are reading now. It is also the writing that will become a published book.
Our primary role as people of God is to love our neighbors as ourselves. If we can accomplish this our world will be better and our democracy will continue.
Eventually there will be a small line of merchandise. Quotes and sayings from these pages, on things you can hold. That is coming. For now, the writing is the thing.
If you have made it this far, thank you for reading. Subscribe to Stay Close and I will send a note when there is one to send.
