Jesse Jackson passed on February 17, 2026. As he was being remembered for his work and the countless lives he touched I was reminded of my encounter with him. During the mid-nineties, I lived in Washington, DC and worked in the CNN Building. On this particular day I happened to be in the lobby when I noticed this tall man coming towards me. It was Jesse Jackson. When he reached me, he touched my forehead with his finger and said “Keep Hope Alive.” Then Jesse stepped around me and continued moving towards the elevator.
For many years, I pondered that statement but never understood its meaning until I experienced devastating losses that happened back to back with no relief in sight. That’s when I understood the importance of Hope. It’s a life ring during life’s emergencies so you don’t give up.
Thank you, Jesse, for loving us enough to fight for us. To share your wisdom, knowledge and understanding with us. To stand in the gap while showing us that collectively we can change the socio-political landscape by coming together in unity to solve this nation’s problems. Which is what we have always done. -
